U.S. to Host Global Renewable Energy Conference in 2008
The U.S. Department of State has officially committed to be the global host for the 2008 Washington International Renewable Energy Conference (WIREC 2008). Approximately 5,000 attendees are expected to take part in the international event, including delegates from 150 countries.
Texas Biodiesel Ban Delayed

The Texas biodiesel industry avoided a major setback on December 23 when the Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) delayed a decision to ban sales of B20 in several major cities because of concerns over nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). TCEQ said it needed more scientific evidence on the level of NOx emitted from burning biodiesel before it ruled on the issue.
Challenges Ahead for UK Renewable Energy Program
Great Britain could have trouble meeting its renewable energy target of 20% by 2020 if it increases the amount of electricity generated under its Renewables Obligation (RO) program — but freezes financial penalties for utilities that help fund the program at 2015 levels — according to the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA).
The American Fuels Act of 2007: Bipartisan Effort Continues
Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA), Barack Obama (D-IL) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) announced Friday that they introduced The American Fuels Act of 2007 to both increase the production of renewable fuels like ethanol, and make that expanded volume of fuel more widely available to motorists nationwide.

Abengoa S.A., a Spanish-based $3 billion diversified energy company, has created Solucar Power, Inc., a new U.S. subsidiary that will handle market development in solar energy. Solucar Power will respond to utility requests for electricity using concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies.
Geothermal Drilling Planned for Pumpernickel Project, Nevada
Sierra Geothermal Power Corp. reports that three thermal gradient wells (temperature survey) and a seismic survey are planned for the Pumpernickel geothermal power project in Nevada. The exploration program is operated by Nevada Geothermal Power Inc.
NYPA & State Police Use Fuel Cells for Communications
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will work with the New York State Police in a $434,000 program to deploy fuel cells in order to provide backup power at 22 public safety communications facilities, enabling them to operate in the event of the loss of power from the grid.
enXco Closes Financing on Minnesota 205 MW Wind Farm
enXco, Inc. has closed on project financing for Minnesota’s 205-megawatt (MW) wind farm, the Fenton Wind Energy Project, which is currently under construction in Murray and Nobles counties. Financial partners are Union Bank of California and GE Energy Financial Services. Valued at $385 million, the wind farm puts enXco’s total U.S. wind energy development portfolio over $1 billion.

HONOLULU ? Hawaiian Electric Co. plans to rely exclusively on ethanol and other renewable fuels to run a proposed new power plant on West Oahu.
The company submitted a written statement about its intentions to the Public Utilities Commission on Monday as public hearings about the 110 megawatt power plant got under way.
